Welcome to Birch Class
A warm welcome back to you all!
It has been a wonderful start to the year, getting to know our new classes and watching everyone settle into our mixed 3 and 4 classes.
Guided Reading
During our guided reading time, we look at extracts from fact and fiction books to practise our comprehension skills. So that we are able to provide the children with a wide range of reading material, we do not often use more that one chapter from a text before moving on. We have decided to share the titles and authors of the books we have been using, in case your child has enjoyed the extract and would like to read on. We hope that you find this useful when choosing potential reading material for your child.
Sofia's Dream - Land Wilson.
Pocket Pirates, The Great Drain Escape - Chris Mould.
Eddy Stone and the Mean Genie's Curse - Simon Cherry
Really Remarkable Reptiles - Jake Williams
The Christmasaurus - Tom Fletcher
Junkyard Jack and the Horse That Talked - Adrian Edmondson
The Firework-maker's Daughter - Philip Pullman
The Witches - Roald Dahl
Hansel and Gretel - Grimm's Fairy tales
Pumpkin Soup - Helen Cooper
A Series of Unfortunate Events - Lemony Snicket
The Tear Thief - Carol Ann Duffy
The Highwayman - Alfred Noyes
Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters - John Steptoe
Frost - Holly Webb
Stickability Quizzes - Maths
After each topic in maths, we have been giving the children quizzes to check their recollection of key aspects. They are a useful tool to make sure that children are still able to use important skills, even when the maths that they are currently learning has moved on.
We will be adding these quizzes once the children have taken them, so that you can support your child with any areas that they are not confident with.
Times Tables
In Year 3, the children are expected to have learnt their 2,5 and 10s times tables from Year 2 and will continue and learn their 3,4 and 8s with division facts.
In Year 4, the children are expected to learn all their times tables up to 12 x 12, including division facts by the end of the year.
