Celebrating Success

Celebrating Success

At Churchill C of E Primary School we celebrate successes in many different ways.

Houses

We run a house system which encourages team spirit, a sense of unity and belonging as well as healthy competition.  The houses are Armstrong, Bannister, Hillary and Peters – all named after people whose achievements can inspire us all. Children can receive house points in a variety of ways, for example by being kind and showing good manners or by producing an excellent piece of work.

Individual Rewards

Each Friday we have a Celebration Assembly where we celebrate our achievements for the week together and merit badges and certificates are awarded for those who have done especially well.  Children also have a ‘Record of Achievement’ card where they collect stickers and stamps and then receive a merit certificate when their card is completed. This is separated into Bronze, Silver and Gold. If they complete their gold, they can work towards a medal.

Class Rewards

Each class has the word ‘Churchill’ printed in large letters on their wall. A whole class may be rewarded if they have done something particularly good, for example if they are well behaved on a class trip or they have led a collective worship well. Each time they are allowed to colour in a letter and when they have coloured in all the letters, the class is allowed to choose an afternoon treat.

Sporting Achievements

Children regularly participate in sporting competitions within the Sevenoaks Partnership and may receive certificates, medals and trophies. Our teams compete in football, netball, cross country, tag rugby, hockey, kwik cricket and swimming.  Often children also have a sporting interest outside of school and they are encouraged to share their achievements with their class.

Creative Arts Achievements

Every year there are two major productions. At Christmas our Infant children perform in a Nativity based play and in the summer our Juniors, led by Year 6 perform in a musical. Over recent years productions have included ‘Porridge' and 'Oink.'

We work closely with Centre Stage Theatre Academy who also put on various productions over the year including taking children to ‘Dare to Dance’ which is a major dance competition for local schools held at the Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks.

In the summer term we hold a creative arts week, this year our theme is ‘Heroes and Villains.’ This will entail a combination of music, art, dance and drama activities.

Where possible we invite external providers to enrich our creative arts curriculum. For example over the last few years we have had steel drums, the National Youth Ballet and ‘Perform’ workshops in school. We also offer the opportunity of the whole class learning an instrument in Year 3 or 4. This has included both the ukulele and the violin.

We like to join in and celebrate community events, for example building scarecrows for the annual Westerham scarecrow competition.

Choir

We have a very successful school choir run by our Music Coordinator Sally Temlett. They meet each week to practice and sing at a variety of school events including the Christmas Carol Service and the Easter service which are held at St. Mary’s Church at Westerham. They also perform annually in the Westerham Schools Music Festival and at the Westerham Christmas Lights event. The choir have also performed at the Sevenoaks Children’s Prom at the Pamoja Hall at Sevenoaks School.

Citizenship Award

Each week during our Celebration Assembly a child from each Key Stage is chosen to receive the very special Citizenship Cup.  They are usually nominated by a teacher for being a particularly good citizen, for example being kind, responsible or respectful.
