Hornbeam - Year 6

Welcome to Hornbeam Class

A warm welcome back after the Christmas holidays. This term the children will be working very hard in English

and maths in readiness for the SATS tests in May. Please ensure the children are reading every day and complete

any homework set on time... Mrs Card.

Please share the timetable with your children - I will be sending a copy home with them - and use it to help them

to be more independent in these final terms at primary school so they are ready for secondary school. Help them

to find strategies to remember what they need for each day at school and encourage them to be responsible for this.

English

The children have just begun a new book - Grimm's Fairy Tales by Phillip Pullman. They have been

reading the stories and identifying their common features. They have particularly enjoyed the gruesome endings

suffered by some of the characters in these stories.... They will be writing their own version of a fairy story.

 

 

 

Maths

 

We have recently started using Power Maths, which the children seem to be really enjoying as it introduces the children to different methods to solving a problem. We're currently focusing on division by using manipulatives and pictorial methods. The children have produced fantastic work so far and we're looking forward to using Power Maths in the following term exploring new concepts. 

 

 

This documents provides a range of questions for both fiction and non-fiction texts, which will develop specific reading skills and strategies. Please ensure you ask a few questions whilst hearing your child read as this will help to develop their key comprehension skills.
