Visions and Values

Our Vision

  • To provide a safe and caring environment that promotes core Christian and British values, preparing children for secondary school and later life.
  • To have high expectations of pupil achievement, enabling all pupils to achieve their potential through the implementation of engaging and challenging learning experiences that meet the needs of all children.
  • To encourage perseverance and resilience through leading by example, so that children see their learning as a journey to success and an opportunity for personal growth.
  • To promote a desire to succeed and pride in achievement.
  • To ensure all children feel respected and valued, through the promotion of good manners and respect for others.

Our Values

We have six core values which are embedded in the life and work of the school and it's community.

We focus on one value each term.

Kindness   Respect   Tolerance   Perseverence   Forgiveness   Honesty

Kindness

We follow the example of Christ in showing kindness to others at all times.  This inlcudes working together, listening to each other, helping and supporting each other and valuing the achievements and contributions of others.  Staff lead by example and provide positive role models for pupils.  Besides showing kindness to each other in school, our pupils are actively involved in acts of kindness to others through their charity work and support of the less fortunate in the

local community.

Respect

At Churchill we believe that it is important to respect eachother and value the ideas and opinions of others.  We see learning about different faiths and cultures  as an opportunity for personal growth.  Children are encouraged to learn about others, ask questions and express their ideas whilst appreciating that others may have differing views, opinions and beliefs. All members of our school community are expected to behave respectfully at all times.

Tolerance

Children appreciate the importance of showing tolerance and self restraint towards others. We aim to prepare them to be responsible citizens in school, the local community and the wider world.  Our Playground ambassadors continually promote this value within the school and help children understand how to be tolerant towards others.

Perseverance

At Churchill we have high aspirations for all pupils and we actively promote and encourage all members of our community to have a 'can do' attitude and to develop a growth mindset.  Through the curriculum, children are given encouragement and support to be the best that they can be and there are many opportunities within the classroom for reflection, editing and improving work, and peer and self assessment.  We are committed to developing children's unique gifts and interests  through the taught curriculum, extra curricular experiences and the opportunity to learn from others.

Forgiveness

We follow the example of Christ in forgiving others. We place a place a high emphasis on children learning from difficult situations and events, and gaining the life skills to understand how to resolve and move forward on issues which may be affecting them. We teach children to understand that they need to treat others as they would like to be treated themselves.  Children have a range of support mechanisms in place such as designated staff, peer ambassadors, reflection spaces, prayer corners and pastoral support.

Honesty

We teach children the importance of being honest both in their interactions with others, but also in their evaluation of their academic performance.  This enables them to become independent and confident leaners who are able to take risks and responsibility for their own learning and actions.

All our values are intrinsically linked and are always used in unison so that childrens wellbeing remains fundamental and foremost in everyday life at school.  This is fundamental to all children achieving their full potential.

British Values

We are committed to promoting core British values. These values are closely linked to our core Christian values and ethos but we also promote them in other ways.

Democracy

Democracy is integrated within our school. Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. The School Council meets regularly and takes part in decision making on a range of topics. They regularly seek out ideas and opinions from their peers. Members of the School Council are voted for by their class and the School Council has a representative from Foundation Stage upwards. Our School Council visits Westerham Town Council to learn about the election process in this country. The Eco-Committee and Charities group also make decisions for the school in a fair and democratic way.

Staff are also involved democratically in many policy decisions and consulted with in a fair manner.

The Rule of Law

All staff members have high expectations of the children in our school. The importance of laws and rules are consistently reinforced in the classroom, as well as through school assemblies and collective worship. Pupils are taught to understand the need for laws – that they are there for individual protection, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Children and staff follow the behaviour policy and clearly understand the rewards and sanctions that are used. Assemblies and discussions in class focus on recognising right from wrong.

Individual Liberty

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices as independent learners, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Children are encouraged to understand their personal freedoms and are taught how to use these rights to best effect. E-safety, PSHE and RE education enable children to make choices in a safe manner.

 Mutual Respect

Our core values of respect and tolerance permeate all areas of school life. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. All members of staff demonstrate respect and model and promote the behaviours and attitudes that are the foundation of positive relationships. Discussions in class and through collective worship allow children to show respect and reverence to all other individuals.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Churchill is situated in an area which is not greatly culturally diverse, therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our RE and PSHE teaching reinforce this. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. Children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths where possible. We actively support a school in Kigezi, Uganda.
