Westerham Links

We work closely with both the Westerham Town Council and the Westerham Town Partnership and have participated in many local events such as the Scarecrow competition, Beating of the Bounds and singing at the late night shopping event.

The Westerham Theatre Club

We would like to thank Jane Hunter and The Westerham Theatre Club for their very kind donation of £750.  This donation supported our Year 6 trip to see the Lion King at the Lyceum in London on 24th January.  The children were mesmerised by the performance and will no doubt remember it for a very long time.

Beating of the Bounds

In May 2017 children from Churchill School joined celebrations in Westerham at the annual Beating the the Bounds event. This event celebrates an ancient tradition in which local people walked the parish boundary to establish the extent of their land. To mark the occasion the children danced around a Maypole on the Green and then helped members of the public to join in too.

Westerham Town Council

Our school council have met with the Town Council and visited their offices to see how local government works. During the General Election Councillor Ogden visited the school to talk to the children about the Election and what it meant for her role. She also assisted with our own mock election and acted as Returning Officer when the results were announced.

Westerham Events

We participate in as many local events as we can. We have recently taken part  in the Westerham 'Clean for the Queen' campaign and also two events on the Green; the 'Talk of the Town' celebrations and a weekend to mark 100 years since the start of WW1. The School choir sing every year at the Late Night Shopping Event and at Christmas they also visited the Memory Café to sing carols. Groups of children have also attended Remembrance and Commonwealth Day Services in the town and at St Mary's Church.

Sir Winston Churchill and General Wolfe

We have good links with the National Trust at Chartwell, the home of Sir Winston Churchill, and also Quebec House where General Wolfe lived. In November 2015 some of the year 5 pupils took part in a poetry recording for a WW1 exhibition at Chartwell which will be going on display in 2016. The children learnt 2 poems off by heart; 'Dolce et Decorum Est' by Wilfred Owen and 'For the Fallen' by Laurence Binyon. They then recorded their interpretations of the poems at Knole Academy.

In January 2015 BBC Radio Kent broadcast live from Chartwell to mark the 50 year anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s death. Some of our children took part in the broadcast and you can listen here...

BBC Radio Kent Broadcast

We also work with the Wolfe Society to organise trips and visits linked to General Wolfe; in the past year children have visited Quebec House and Greenwich to visit the observatory and sites significant to General Wolfe.
